The Royal Canadian Mint is Winnipeg's high-tech, high-volume coin manufacturing facility. The building was designed by Etienne-Joseph Gaboury, and officially opened to the public in 1976. The striking triangular building overlooking a scenic prairie presses 184 million loonies and 700 million pennies annually! In addition, 70 countries benefit from the coin production such as kroner for Norway, pesos for Colombia and baht for Thailand.
Guided tours of the Royal Canadian Mint comprise of a 5-minute video presentation in the facility's theatre area, followed by a 40-minute walking tour in the whole facility, where the process of coin-making is exposed. The Royal Canadian Mint was named one of "Canada's Top 100 Employers" from 2007 up to 2010. The Royal Canadian Mint has a boutique where you can shop for gifts, souvenirs, collector coins and an exclusive Royal Canadian Mint clothing line.
