The garden was opened to the public in 1995, with the purpose of celebrating Nelson's relationship with its sister Japanese City known as Miyazu City. Inside the Miyazu Japanese Garden you'll find ponds, flowering cherry trees, Japanese irises, wisterias, and a teahouse. The garden offers walking, cycling, and swimming opportunities. Visit between September to October to see cherry trees and wisterias in bloom, or find a lovely scenario of Japanese irises in their bluish purple hue when you come over during December to January.
