If you're planning to bring your cat or dog (or parakeet) along with you on your self-drive holiday, be warned: Not all RV rental operators allow pets in their vehicles. To make things much easier for you, we have compiled the best pet-friendly RVs in the US.

Although pets are allowed in the following vehicles, please remember that certain fees will apply. Here are the applicable fees depending on the operator that provides the vehicles:

Pets are welcome at no added cost, as long as the renter agrees to clean up after their animal and the vehicle is returned in the same condition as pick up. Otherwise, a cleaning fee of $250 will apply, which will automatically be deducted from the bond.

For pick ups starting January 2013, a non-refundable $100 pet fee is required. The renter must advise upon booking if they wish to bring a pet and is responsible for all damages. The vehicle must be returned in the same condition as pick up, otherwise cleaning fees starting $50 per hour will apply.

Available In: Bellingham, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver (minimum 90 day rental period in Anchorage and New York; minimum 60 day rental period in other locations)

Pets are allowed after special authorization from the operator and a deposit is paid at the time of collection. The fee depends on the type of pet and vehicle and can range anywhere from US$ 100-500. The pet deposit is refunded after unit is thoroughly checked at drop off.

Sunshine RV (Applicable to International Clients Only)

Available In: Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Orlando and San Francisco
