One of Townsville's busiest attraction is the Reef HQ, because this world's largest living coral reef aquarium is quite hard to resist. Reef HQ first opened in June 1987 and it is now a home to 130 coral species and 120 fish species plus hundreds of other marine species of sea-urchins, sea stars, feather star nails, worms, sponges and many more. Reef HQ has 9 exhibits excluding Turtle Hospital and Behind the Scenes tours. The Reef Zone is a recommended introduction to discovering Reef HQ, it showcases a real environment of the Great Barrier Reef. Another exhibit is the outstanding reef of predators, where you'll see stingrays, sharks, giant trevally, humphead maori wrasse and other predatory fish swimming through the replica of the SS Yongala shipwreck. The Turtle Hospital is a facility that opened in August 2009 to provide rehabilitation and treatment to injured marine turtles.
